Every kid loves a snow day, but sometimes that means they are stuck inside for most of the day until they are able to go out and play. We did a round up of a few ideas that kids can do while waiting for the bad weather to pass over and then a couple more that they can do once they are able to play in the snow!
The first activity the kids can do in anticipation of the snow fall is make their own snow measuring ruler! You can use a normal wooden meter stick, ruler, or even get a normal plank of wood and mark the inches accordingly. Have the children paint the stick white for a snowman, brown for a reindeer, or red for Santa. If they have a favorite character they want to make instead they can do that as well. At the very top all you need is a felt circle for the head of whatever character they chose to do and have them craft away. The directions for the snowman measuring stick can be found here.
If the kids are getting a little antsy and want to run around here are a few more ideas for an inside activity and it only requires a roll of masking tape! You can create the outline for hopscotch, a jumping competition, and even a race track for their cars! All the different ways you can get creative with this idea can be found here.
Now it is finally time for the kids to go outside! Well they have already made their snowmen and are ready for something new. Craft up some snow paint! This can also be another indoor activity to get them ready for some snow play, but the real fun happens once they get outside. All you need is water and food coloring and some water bottles that can be found at a dollar store. The kids can paint their snow figures, or if there isn’t enough snow to make a snowman they can always paint pictures in the snow.
You can even incorporate some science into this snow day! How about trying a snow volcano experiment? All you need is a plastic cup or bottle, food coloring, backing soda, vinegar and of course some snow! You can find the complete directions for this experiment by clicking here.
Eventually the kids are going to have to come inside, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t bring the snow with them. They can bring in some snow and make themselves their own dessert, snow ice cream. Here you can find the delicious recipe. If you live in a place where snow doesn’t normally fall just make your own. All you need is conditioner and baking soda. Your kids will be warm inside while building whatever they wish with their “snow”. You can find this recipe at here.
